WASHINGTON, D.C.—Bill Enright, CEO of the biotech company Vaccitech, thought Shen Yun Performing Arts is “beautiful” after seeing the company perform at The Kennedy Center Opera House on Jan. 28.

“I’m quite enjoying it,” Mr. Enright said. “It’s wonderful.”

New York-based Shen Yun presents classical Chinese dance, which, with its “flips and gentle elegance,” is “one of the most athletic and expressive art forms in the world,” according to the Shen Yun website. Shen Yun’s dances, the website adds, often feature storylines, presenting “cherished stories of the past,” and portraying heroes who “embody the most exalted virtues of Chinese civilization.”

Mr. Enright said he enjoyed the mini-dramas depicted by the dance performances, enhanced with the animated colorful backdrops that interact with the dancers on the stage.

“It’s nice to see the stories through dance,” Mr. Enright said.

Renee Enright, a singer, said she loved Shen Yun’s colorful costumes.

“I think the costumes are just incredible,” she said.

‘It Was Enlightening’

Laurie Hart, an attorney, saw deep meaning in Shen Yun.

“They were incredible, and the message was great.”

Shen Yun shows China before communism.

Ms. Hart said through the performance, she saw the destruction communism has brought to China. She added that Shen Yun touches people’s hearts.

“You just want to go see it, because it goes to your heart. ... Everybody should go see it. It was enlightening. It was fantastic,” she said.

Ms. Hart also praised Shen Yun’s music, performed by an orchestra that combines traditional Chinese instruments with classical Western instruments.

“The music was amazing, absolutely amazing,” Ms. Hart said. “It was incredible.”

Ms. Hart’s husband, Mario Hart, also said Shen Yun is “fantastic.”

“Really nice, unique experience, absolutely,” Mr. Hart said.
