When Mexican paramedics and police arrived at a crime scene of reported gunshots, they found a horrific sight: a young man had been murdered and was lying dead on the street. Photos from the tragic incident show a loyal dog standing guard over its owner’s body.
On the morning of May 18, 2020, residents from the city of Guadalajara in Jalisco, a western state in Mexico, heard the sound of gunshots in their neighborhood. After seeing the body of a young person on the crossroads of Agustin Yanez Street and Union Avenue, a concerned passerby then called the police, according to The Daily Mail.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the man surrounded in a pool of blood.
Images from the scene show the heartbroken dog, which is believed to be a pit bull, lying next to his owner right in the middle of the street, with police carrying on the investigation in the background.
Upon arriving at the scene, paramedics couldn’t do anything to save the man.
Gustavo Saldivar, a paramedic with the Red Cross, told Televisa Regional, a unit of Televisa that owns and operates television stations across Mexico, in Spanish, that he believed the victim was to be around the age of 25. The man, whose identity is yet unknown, suffered from multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the face. The paramedics pronounced the young man dead on the spot.

However, the loyal pooch, which sat next to the man’s body, refused to leave his owner’s side for a while. Pictures from the incident show the pit bull resting against the corpse. It seems like the dog was standing guard over its owner’s body.
According to the Mirror, authorities are continuing to investigate further, and it is still unclear why the man was shot in public. Additionally, the whereabouts of the loyal pit bull is still unknown and it’s unclear what happened to him after he was found that day.
Indeed, the loss of a young life and a faithful canine left to fend for himself is an undeniable tragedy. Even more unfortunate is the fact that such events happen too often in the area.

Sadly, homicides and missing persons are not only prevalent in the city of Guadalajara but have also seen a rise over the past couple of years. According to a report by the U.S. Department of State Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), the increase in crime is largely due to fights between rival drug-trafficking organizations. Murder and missing-person reports have also increased, along with “crimes of opportunity.”
According to Fox News, Mexico reported over 35,000 murders in 2019, a 2.7 percent increase compared to the previous year.
