The Food and Drug Administration said a Houston-based food company has recalled nearly 100 products over concerns of a possible Listeria contamination, including a variety of dips and hummus.
Pita Pal Foods LP issued the voluntary recall on products made between May 30, 2019, and June 25, 2019, after an FDA inspection at one of the company’s manufacturing facilities confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. The company statement, issued on Monday, July 15, notes that the Listeria contaminants were found in the facility only, not in any finished food products.
“No illnesses have been reported to date for these products,” the company said, adding that it is “issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution.”
“An estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die. The infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems,” the agency stated.
“You should seek medical care and tell the doctor about eating possibly contaminated food if you have a fever and other symptoms of possible listeriosis, such as fatigue and muscle aches, within two months after eating possibly contaminated food,” the CDC says. “This is especially important if you are pregnant, age 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system.”
Symptoms of listeriosis include a headache, high fever, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain.
Pita Pal Foods said the products were distributed around the country and to the United Arab Emirates.
