In an internal meeting on Dec. 21, China’s National Health Commission reported that 248 million people were likely to have been infected with COVID-19 in the first 20 days of December.
It’s shocking yet not unexpected because China, over the past three years, has unfortunately cultivated fertile ground for viruses to thrive. A viral outbreak needs three factors: sources of infection, routes of transmission, and a susceptible population. In China’s unique geopolitical environment, these three conditions are fully met.
