Gout—a type of arthritis long blamed on overindulgence of sweets and alcohol—is primarily caused by genetics, according to a massive international study.

Researchers analyzing the DNA of 2.6 million people found that inherited genes play the crucial role in determining who develops the painful condition that affects roughly 4 percent of American adults.
