A resident from Long Beach, California, has been confirmed as the first locally acquired U.S. case of clade 1 mpox (previously known as monkeypox), the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement on Oct. 14.

This is the “seventh case nationally and the first without known travel,” the department said.
