Plant-based straws, touted widely as eco-friendly, have been found to contain “forever chemicals” that are known to damage the environment and be harmful to human beings, according to a recent study.

Forever chemicals, also known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are a group of over 12,000 manmade chemicals known for their waterproof and nonstick properties. In an Aug. 24 study published at Taylor & Francis, researchers examined PFAS concentrations in 39 brands of straws sold in the Belgian market made from five materials—paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel, and plastic.
