Just as some popular musicians have one hit that is more recognizable than the rest of their work, many classical composers are remembered for just one composition. Sometimes it’s because that work is generally recognized as the composer’s greatest creation, but often it’s because that one excerpt is the only part that was popularized.
Marco Antonio Cesti (1623–1669) was a prolific composer of operas and sacred works, but only one aria he wrote is remembered today: “Intorno all’idol mio” (“Around My Idol”).
