‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’
Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) returns in a feature-length continuation of the titular crime saga, now set during World War II. Barry Keoghan joins as the younger brother, Duke Shelby, and Ada Thorne (Sophie Rundle) joins them once again as the stalwart sister. The WWII setting gives the saga a heavier sky, with smoke hanging over Birmingham, as the Shelby clan presses into a new decade. Murphy moves through it with the coiled restraint he’s perfected, while Keoghan’s Duke brings a streak of impatience that hints at a changing of the guard.Family Pick

‘Penguin Bloom’
After a rooftop fall in Thailand leaves Sam Bloom (Naomi Watts) partially paralyzed, husband Cameron (Andrew Lincoln), her mother Jan (Jacki Weaver), and three sons struggle to pull her back into family life. Then, a wounded magpie the boys name Penguin moves into the house and slowly shifts the mood of everyone inside of it.This based-on-a-true-story film was surprisingly entertaining. Watts keeps Sam stubborn and human, the kids feel like actual kids, and I was amazed that a scrappy bird carried half the movie without turning it too sugary.
When a Promise Pays Off
‘It Could Happen to You’
NYPD cop Charlie Lang (Nicolas Cage) keeps a promise to waitress Yvonne Biasi (Bridget Fonda) after a lottery ticket hits big, and he splits it with her. His wife Muriel (Rosie Perez) erupts when a fortune walks out the door. A simple act of decency turns into front-page fame.I had a good time watching decency beat greed without turning preachy, and Cage plays it with a sincerity that sneaks up on you. It moves fast, keeps things light, and leaves you thinking that doing the right thing is a gamble worth taking in life, every time.
Nerve at 20,000 Feet

‘Decision Against Time’
Test pilot John Mitchell (Jack Hawkins) bends every rule to bring a stricken prototype down on its wheels while wife Mary (Elizabeth Sellars) waits at base, and the future of Conway Aero hangs in the balance. An engaging character study of an ordinary man using skill and nerve when everything goes wrong. Hawkins holds firm and flight sequences carry real bite.
