This week, we feature a storm-chasing island race for survival and an endearing woodland tale about a boy with a mighty big secret.

New Release

‘Storm Rider: Legend of Hammerhead’

Island communities survive beneath a permanent electrical storm while a group of immortal elites limit access to the sanctuary fortress city of Argos by holding the brutal Storm Riding trials. Rebel pilots Neb (Marco Ilso) and Maia (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) sail toward the barrier, defying the rule of the powers that be.

The film swings for big myth with storm-lashed boat duels, scheming villains, and fascinating lore. Young heroes punch their throttles toward the forbidden horizon while evil-doers stand guard, keeping the whole thing sailing forward even when scale surpasses budget.

Family Pick

‘Pete’s Dragon’

Young boy Pete (Oakes Fegley) has grown up in the woods with a towering green dragon named Elliott, until ranger Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) discovers him. However, once a logger decides he needs proof Elliott exists, the scramble to capture the dragon forces Pete to fight for the only home he remembers.
The bond between Pete and Elliott carries the film through misty hills and small-town fear. Some darker lighting choices flirt with heaviness. Yet set in the Northwest (shot in New Zealand), the wide vistas and folk-leaning score keep the mood airy and wistful.

Love Lessons From Animals

‘Zookeeper’

Griffin Keyes (Kevin James) runs the Franklin Park Zoo with ease but fumbles at romance, so when he plans to quit for a slicker career, the animals reveal they can talk—coaching him through dating techniques before he walks out of the gate for good.
I reckoned Kevin James would lean into his usual flustered charm routine and that the romance would run on pure movie logic, yet the mix of slapstick and wisecracking zoo animals kept me laughing more than I expected. It’s goofy, loud, and built for crowds.

Comedy | Fantasy | Romance Release Date: July 8, 2011 Directors: Frank Coraci Starring: Kevin James, Rosario Dawson, Leslie Bibb Running time: 1 hour, 42 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: YouTube, Amazon, Apple TV Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

Love and Suspicion Collide

‘Circle of Danger’

Ray Milland plays Clay Douglas, an American who goes to Britain to investigate why his brother was the only man killed during a World War II commando raid in Nazi-occupied France,

A lean postwar mystery that lets Milland carry doubt in his eyes, while investigating wary villages and windswept moors, building toward a climax that feels satisfying without grandstanding.
