This week, we feature an animated biblical tale just in time for Christmas and a tale of a classic sleuthing duo as they stumble into another case.

New Release

‘David’

David (Phil Wickham) is a shepherd until a giant named Goliath steps forward and challenges Israel. While soldiers freeze, David takes the field with only a sling and a few stones. His rise to power places him on a path watched closely by King Saul (Adam Michael Gold).

The bold animation and music make this familiar story feel lively, and screenplay keeps its focus on courage and faith. It’s bright, sincere, and crafted to leave you feeling lifted when the final scene arrives.

Family Pick

‘Onward’

Elf brothers Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley Lightfoot (Chris Pratt) find a way to bring their father back for one day, but it only works halfway. To fix it, they head out on a wild quest filled with risky turns and strange creatures that push them across rough terrain as they race the clock.

This film hits its mark as a warm quest story, but the topic of a father returning in an unusual form makes it better suited for older kids. The humor keeps things moving and the bond between the brothers gives this tale its heartbeat without overdoing it.

Adventure | Buddy Comedy | Family Release Date: March 6, 2020 Director: Dan Scanlon Starring: Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus Running Time: 1 hour, 42 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: Fandango At Home, YouTube, Amazon Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

One Man Against Mall Chaos

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’

Paul Blart (Kevin James) works as a mall security guard who takes his badge far more seriously than anyone around him. When a crew of crooks storms the mall and takes shoppers hostage, including his daughter Maya (Raini Rodriguez), Paul becomes the only person left inside with a plan.

This comedy carries a goofy charm that works. The humor stays good-natured even as slapstick takes center stage. By the end, I was cheering for a guy who refused to stop trying, no matter how many obstacles he faced.

Action | Comedy | Crime Release Date: Jan. 16, 2009 Director: Steve Carr Starring: Kevin James, Keir O'Donnell, Jayma Mays Running Time: 1 hour, 31 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: Amazon, Fandango At Home, Tubi TV Rated: 3 stars out of 5

Nick and Nora’s Next Round

‘After the Thin Man’

Nick (William Powell) and Nora Charles (Myrna Loy) return to San Francisco and are pulled into a search for the missing husband of Nora’s cousin. The trail leads to a nightclub tied to trouble.

This sequel holds up quite well because Nick and Nora are fun to watch, and the mystery keeps shifting just enough to stay interesting. The humor and brisk pace also keep the story peppy.
