‘Dead of Winter’: Emma Thompson in a Rock-Solid Thriller

Seeing Thompson stitch a bullet wound, press-check a Glock, and keep kicking after getting nailed with a high-caliber bolt-action rifle is surprisingly fun.

In “Dead of Winter,” directed by Brian Kirk, Emma Thompson lights up the screen in a surprisingly enjoyable, tense survival thriller set in the brutal, icy expanse of northern Minnesota, which is, of course, Fargo country. The British Thompson nails the Fargo accent nearly as well as the American Frances McDormand did in the Coen brothers’ “Fargo” (1996).
