At the risk of sounding old-fashioned, they don’t make them like this any more. Courtney Dowe is a self-professed street performer whose dulcet tones and soulful strumming are invigorated with passion and protest. The Baltimore-based acoustic songstress puts the kind of heart in her songs that is seldom heard these days.
Reminiscent of Tracy Chapman, Dowe writes songs that highlight injustices, speaking of love and life’s trials and tribulations. Every song has a story to tell and a particular highlight is ‘A Song for Sean Bell’, about a young black man shot dead by police in New York City. A stunning debut – expect her to go far.
