NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—There can be many reasons not to get out and see Shen Yun Performing Arts, but if we really let those reasons get in the way, we won’t get the opportunity to boast about seeing Shen Yun to our friends.

“It was a thrill of a lifetime. I could cry. I can’t wait to tell my friends what I saw because not many people in Connecticut got to see it,” said Gloria Sikorski, the 94-year-old mother of Lori Sikorski, a professor and former animation instructor at New York Film Academy.

“I’m going to brag. I’m going to boast that I got to see it,” added Gloria.

Shen Yun is based in New York and it is dedicated to presenting the beauty of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“It was amazing, beautiful. The colors, the shapes that everything made. I love the animation, and the playing with the live-action and the animation together. I thought that was very fun,” said Lori.

Using classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun is able to tell moving stories from Chinese history, mythology, and literature.
“To me, the fact that they put these dances to stories, that was amazing how you could just watch the stories unfold,” said Gloria.

Classical Chinese dance requires its dancers to perfect their form, bearing, and technique. On top of that, they must have a deep understanding of traditional Chinese culture.

“The energy and the commitment to the form, and the expertise of the performers. They’re so talented, and you can see the work that goes into it, and how disciplined they are to practice and to perform like this. It’s really quite beautiful, amazing,” said Lori.

The mother and daughter shared their feelings after the performance.

“I feel very happy. We feel happy and full. I’m glad we got to share it together,” said Lori.

“I feel good inside,” said Gloria.

As someone who had studied Chinese history, Lori appreciated Shen Yun sharing true Chinese culture.

“[For] many years in college, I studied Chinese history, so I love the whole Tang dynasty. All the ancient history of China has always been so amazing to me,” she said.
