SAN FRANCISCO—Young ballerina Devon Blowers and her mom, a writer, were very touched by Shen Yun Performing Arts at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, Jan. 8.
A promising young ballerina who just performed in the Nutcracker with her studio, Devon is a junior at Rockland High School in Sacramento.
“The dancing’s really, really great. The dancers have such precision and they are so quiet on stage; it’s amazing,” said Devon. “Everyone is so flexible and ... so uniform,” added Devon, who has been dancing since age five.
Asked how she sees classical Chinese dance as a dancer herself, Devon replied, “I think audience members don’t really realize how difficult the dancers’ work is, but I could definitely tell.”
New York-based Shen Yun features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending East and West, and dazzling animated backdrops, together creating one spectacular performance, the company website explains.
Devon was not only moved by the dance pieces, but also by the Chinese legends displayed on stage. “I like all the stories,” she said. “It was presented professionally and was humorous at times. I really liked it; it was fun and moving.”
“I would tell all my friends it is so marvelous, you have to see it. It’s absolutely amazing, an experience you can’t miss out on,” she concluded.
Devon’s mother, Loren Blowers, just published her first science fiction novel titled Sting Wisher this year. She felt the performance was graceful, yet athletic, very spiritual and very moving.
“I just thought it was captivating. Oh, I would say you can’t miss it,” she added. “It’s an entertainment experience you just can’t miss—very touching. And it brings another culture into your consciousness. Absolutely a must,” she said.
Mrs. Blowers felt the specific performances were expanding her consciousness. “I loved the mythology. To see the mythology of another culture, for me, combining the dance with the stories of course, is inspiring and got my mind working on things. Very nice,” she concluded.
Shen Yun’s mini-drama pieces draw upon stories and legends that span China’s history, from the Yellow Emperor through the Tang and Song dynasties and all the way to the modern day, says the company’s website.
