Australia is very well known for its surf culture and even more so now with Australian Joel Parkinson coming out as this seasons ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Champion. But this summer there is another kind of board making waves in Western Australia.

The YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) is playing host to a state wide summer skate series.  With 12 qualifying rounds and a state final, it is one of Perth’s most wide spread skate competitions. The opening round was held on December 4th in Nedlands, Western Australia. YMCA Perth, WA.

As I sat watching the competition two things really came across. One is that the idea of using popular culture to promote a healthy life style appears very effective. The park was packed with skaters pushing themselves, each other and enjoying it all surrounded by good intentions.

The other is this idea of peer mentors. The competition is run by older skaters who many of the younger competitors look up to. There is a real emphasis on good conduct and looking out for your fellow skater. The older skaters really promote these ideas.

I always find taking photos of skateboarding to be quite refreshing and interesting. Skaters are always coming up with interesting maneuvers and tricks that can really look cool when frozen by the lens.

The YMCA summer series will be interesting to follow and I look forward to catching the finals in March next year.
