While many countries on the other side of the globe prepared for a white snow-covered Christmas, Perth’s skies were a baby blue, and a record heatwave was expected to arrive at the same time Santa did.

For me, a hot beachside Christmas is what I’m used to, and I sometimes envy the idea of a white Christmas. There is something special about the falling snow, a warm cup of hot chocolate around a fire, and the childhood excitement that Santa will soon land his sleigh on a snow-covered roof.

In Santa’s stocking there was a vicious week-long heatwave for Perth, and boy did it strike with a vengeance. For a week straight over Christmas and New Year’s, temperatures averaged  37 degrees Celsius (98.6 F) or above and maxed out at  42.1 degrees Celsius (107.78 F) on New Year’s Eve.

Personally, I had a great holiday period (however short) and look forward to what 2013 will bring. I also wish you a belated Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to you and yours.
