PASADENA, Calif.—With the New Year just around the corner, another New Year celebration has begun in Pasadena.

“I’m really enjoying the diversity of Chinese culture,” said Mr. Young, an engineer from Pasadena.

At the packed performance at the Civic Auditorium, dances from the Tang and Song Dynasties, the Yi of southern China, as well as Tibet, graced the stage. Performances ranged from imperial Tang drums to Mongolian bowl dances, encompassing the rich history and varied traditions of China.

Mr. Scinouni, originally from France and in the import/export business, said that it was a “great show.”

He liked the “combination of modern and traditional.” In the performance “The Miraculous Exhibit,” a modern day young man with a broken arm visits an exhibit of Falun Dafa, a traditional cultivation practice.

Mr. Scinouni also liked the “beautiful costumes.” In the dance of the “Snow-Capped Mountain,” dancers dress in long sleeves, sturdy boots, and colorful prayer beads.
