PASADENA, Calif.—The Rose Parade has been a tradition for years in Pasadena. This year a new tradition has started with the Chinese New Year Spectacular at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

The old-world style of the Civic juxtaposed against modern, fashionable Pasadena makes it a perfect setting for the Chinese New Year Spectacular, a show that mixes traditional dance with modern day events and musical arrangements. Audience members returning from last year appreciated both the more intimate setting and the increased depth of the performances.

“It was excellent,” Alan from Burbank said. “I liked the chopstick dance [”Mongolian Chopsticks“]. Actually, I liked the persecuted father, [”Persecuted on a Sacred Path“]. The little girl was amazing, great.”

The Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular marks a revival of pre-Communist traditional Chinese philosophy and beliefs.

Alan’s wife Angela said, “This year it was more spiritual. It adds more to the show. I was more into the stories.”

Office worker Lan’s favorite performance was “Welcoming Spring”, a fan dance composed of quick footwork, crisp movements, and stunning bursts of color.

“It was refreshing. It is lovely, lovely,” she said. “This is the second time I saw the show. Very cultural, gentle.”

For these audience members attending the Chinese New Year Spectacular has already become a yearly tradition.
