A Texas police officer rushed to the aid of a woman in labor and helped deliver a baby boy after hearing her screaming from her car outside the police station.
Fort Worth Police Officer Rafael Salazar was in a virtual meeting inside Northwest Police Station on Nov. 4 when he heard a woman’s cries for help.
In the car was the expectant mom, Leah Reeves with her partner, who had pulled over at the police station on their way to the hospital.
At that point, the baby had already started to come out and Reeves was definitely in active labor.
Salazar requested medical services from Fort Worth Fire Department and MedStar Mobile Healthcare, but there was no time to lose. Before help could arrive, the officer had already assisted in delivering a healthy baby boy, Renzo, who came into the world weighing 8 pounds 14 ounces (3.6 kg)
“We definitely don’t expect or even imagine coming in for our shift ... that we’re going to be delivering a child,” Salazar said. “It’s definitely something that I'll never forget.”
For Reeves, it was really special, she said that it felt like a “community coming together” moment. Renzo’s family is grateful that the little child will know that the world is a caring place when he grows up and this was just an example of it.
“You’re a hero! Thank you for being in the right place at the right time,” wrote one netizen, while another insisted, “I think this man should be able to skip 2-4 years of schooling if he chose to get into the medical field after this!”
