CHICAGO—Nick Dicaro, his daughter Daniela, and friend Holly, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Auditorium Theatre on April 9.

Dicaro’s investment company sells mortgages, trusts, and land contracts, and Holly is a clinical psychologist.

He said he wanted to see Shen Yun since 2019 and what sold him was the slogan, “Chna before communism.” He told himself that “there is something in there that I have to see.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by leading Chinese artists and quickly became the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture.

“What I saw was an unbelievable message of honor to a culture that is from thousands of years, and it is fighting against the oppression of communism and against authoritarian totalitarian control,” Dicaro said.

“I want to support something like this, because I see these little things starting to happen in the United States and other parts of the world. These totalitarian regimes, they may call it democracy, they may call it, friendly names, but you know what, it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” he said.

Dicaro loved the artistry of the performance. “In my spare time, I’m a dancer and a musician. I play guitar, violin, and viola mandolin. I love music and dance,” he said.

He said he could relate to the acrobatics of the dances. “I didn’t know that a lot of the flips and things were traditional Chinese. China has been going on for thousands of years. And, artistically, it was really unique.”

He pointed out his favorite dance, Water Sleeves. “I really liked the flowing movements and just how everything was coming about.”

Dicaro said he found the Artistic Director D.F. very inspiring. “I have aspirations of creating some sort of a company that has nothing to do with financial products. I read a little of the introduction, and then to learn that they have eight [dance] companies,” he said.

“It’s not a small endeavor to create something like this, and to have the boldness and the courage to talk about what they’re doing. And that’s what I love,” Dicaro said. “That’s what I love so much. Forget about skin color; these are human values that are very foundational to the core of humanity.”

Dicaro noted the spiritual message Shen Yun has to offer.
“I love that. Atheism and evolution are the work of the devil. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Christian or whatever, there is evil, and there is good, and there are things that support evil. And then there are things that support good,” he said.
“If you recognize what those things are, you can understand what is good and what is evil. But people think some things are good when they’re really evil, and I love that message. They talk about the organ harvesting stuff and how the other Chinese are persecuting the Uyghurs and the other people in China.”

He said the orchestra impressed him. “As a violinist myself, the violins were in such unison that I thought at times, there was only one violin playing. [The orchestra had] such a richness and fullness, because they were all together as one. It was amazing.”
