SYDNEY—Physician Dr. Basim Nona found Shen Yun Performing Arts so “beautiful. Better than expected to be very honest,” he said. “It’s the colours, the choreography and soprano in particular ... very impressive—her voice is just unreal.”

Dr. Nona was seeing the New York-based Shen Yun at the Sydney Theatre, on April 15, with general medical practitioner, Dr. Attiaf Selmif and Sattar Hisan, a computer engineer, for the very first time.

Dr. Nona has his roots in Iraq in the Middle East, but he had spent time in other countries as well.

He said mankind’s “desire for a more peaceful, serene, harmonious existence” is reflected in the songs.

He liked the fact that there were some translations to the songs in English subtitles on the backdrop screen.

“The song texts the singers perform are original works written for these pieces. Brimming with philosophical reflection about human life and containing deep layers of meaning, the texts go beyond the boundaries of nation, race, and culture, and have been fondly received and appreciated the world over,” the company website says.

“It does show that we all seek the same thing, so you can connect.”

“Sophisticated dance techniques, an orchestra joining instruments from both the East and West, beautiful costumes, and a stunning back drop—this is Shen Yun at first glance,” the company website says.

“I loved it, I really loved it,” Dr. Selmif said. “The music was very, very nice, the colours just … a lot of the things that you hear about China. You can see and feel. Everything’s very nice.”

Mr. Hisan said she also loved every bit of Shen Yun.

“It was very impressive. I mean the way that they presented it is very, very nice. The dancers were preforming incredibly well.”
