NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Retired intellectual property attorney Ron Sobel has represented countless artists during his career. A lover of all arts, he has tried for the past six years to get his wife, Jill Sattinger, to attend Shen Yun Performing Arts.

On March 22, he finally succeeded, and the couple watched the matinee at Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts.

Ms. Sattinger thought the whole show was fabulous.

“It was beautiful and very special,” she said. “I know how many years of hard work—the spiritual effort from the [performers’] heart and mind—it took to create [the show.] Keep up the good work!”

Mr. Sobel added that he knew Shen Yun would be special but was still surprised.

“It was fabulous! I didn’t know it would [talk about social issues] and explain the curve of mankind. I thought that was incredible,” he said.

“I knew it was artistic—I didn’t know there would be an arc about Buddhism, spirituality, and dictatorship. I didn’t expect it to be more impressive than I thought it was going to be. It was special.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company.

Endowed with 5,000 years of history, China was once known as the “Land of the Divine.” For millenniums, its people believed that by keeping their hearts pure and adhering to strict moral standards, they will be blessed by the divine.

However, after the communist takeover and its spread of atheism, all this traditional culture was systematically destroyed. Today, Shen Yun’s mission is to bring back the beauty and goodness of pre-communist China.

Mr. Sobel loved that Shen Yun is portraying traditional values and art.

“I’ve been trying for years to come. We travel around the world a lot, and we like to see art. So, my wife didn’t understand why I was so serious about [Shen Yun,]” he expressed.

“I just knew that this was going to meld art and passion and creativity. I’m speechless. I wasn’t moved to tears—I was moved to smile and in shock the whole time.”

A highly respected attorney in his field, Mr. Sobel has represented many famous artists in his career but has never seen anything quite like Shen Yun.

“It’s just fabulous. It’s one of the best performances. I’ve represented multi-platinum recording artists and very, very famous television people—but I’ve never seen [a show] like this before. Wow.”

He believes that everyone should go see Shen Yun for themselves.

“I’m a modest guy; I’m shy when I see something special. All I can say is—it’s special. People will not, cannot understand it until they’ve seen it themselves.”
