Shen Yun, ‘Artists tell great stories’

This is Dr. Chan’s first time seeing Shen Yun perform. He was most impressed with the soprano Geng Haolan, “Her voice is amazing.” He also liked the story-based dances, “The artists tell great stories. They coordinated perfectly with other elements on the stage.”

Dr. Chan was impressed with the orchestra and said, “The Chinese traditional music is a perfect outcome of thousands of years of refining. Shen Yun presented it with instruments from both East and West make the music more attractive. This kind of music then brings out the best of the dancing on stage.”

Music is Dr. Chan’s favorite pastime. He said he enjoyed the “erhu, it sounds marvelous both solo and with other instruments. It’s very hard to make erhu and piano sound so well together. It requires delicate balance yet Shen Yun’s orchestra made it should so pleasant and harmonious.”

Established in 2006 by a group of overseas artists, Shen Yun has set out on a mission to revive 5,000 years of civilization, in particular the spirituality that was part of China’s divinely inspired culture.

Dr. Chan was touched that Shen Yun included the traditional values, like good-versus-evil, presented in the stories told through Shen Yun’s story-dances.

“The stories tell people the importance of spiritual values and how it can better people’s lives. Currently what the Chinese people are missing now are the spiritual values of their culture,” he said.

“The performance is full of dramas and excellent ideas. The artists did such marvelous job telling the stories with graceful and skillful movements.”

Shen Yun presents classical Chinese dance, an orchestra comprised of both Chinese and Western instruments, vocal soloists, and colorful backdrops and costumes, all in one evening.
