BIRMINGHAM, UK—It was Philip Sinel’s third time seeing a Shen Yun Performing Arts performance.
Mr. Sinel, senior partner at Sinels Advocates, a law firm, appreciated the world Shen Yun brings to life—a civilization steeped in spirituality.

“It’s an insight into another culture. It’s very pure, so it’s good,” he said, after the March 31 performance at The ICC Birmingham–Hall 1.

New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the 5,000 years of divinely imparted Chinese culture—a culture from before the communist era.
Mr. Sinel recognized that Shen Yun portrays traditional Chinese culture and shares it with the world through the universal languages of music and dance.
“It’s very important—it is what part of China stands for when you take out the politics,” he said.

Shen Yun artists follow a path of tradition. As explained in the company’s program book, Shen Yun artists share a spiritual journey and take seriously their self-refinement and morality, which lends to the purity of their art.

The spiritual themes of Shen Yun’s performance resonated with Mr. Sinel, reminding him of his ability to recall his past reincarnations. Sharing this memory made him quite emotional.

“Well, this is surprising—I can remember my previous incarnations,” he said.

Each dance piece displays the essence of the traditional Chinese culture’s core values, some of them depicting stories from ancient times to the present day.

Mr. Sinel thought that Shen Yun’s revival of this Chinese heritage helps people understand the more spiritual aspect of their lives.
“It reminds us that this is all transitory, isn’t it? It’s all transitory, the soul goes on.”

Shen Yun, ‘Like Going Into a Dream World’

Steve Ellis, a financial healthcare advisor for a private firm, also attended the March 31 Shen Yun performance in Birmingham. He didn’t know what to expect as he bought the tickets on his wife’s recommendation.

“It was like going into a dream world. It was magnificent, really stepped out of normality into a great history of China through dance and music, was absolutely wonderful,” he said.

The harmony and culture on the stage led Mr. Ellis to a surprising moment. Due to his new understanding about Chinese culture, he felt a “spiritual connection with the visuals. ... Quite a moment!”

The sounds from a two-stringed erhu played by a soloist also gave him a special feeling.

“I was ... drifting away listening to it—very, very serene. I don’t know many things that are ... that serene.”

Overall, the theme of good overcoming evil in many dance pieces uplifted Mr. Ellis.

“That gives us hope. ... I was watching the show thinking about what’s happening in the world, and how hope is not lost.”
