SEATTLE—One audience member experienced magic and grace when she saw Shen Yun Performing Arts visited the Marion Oliver McCaw Hall on April 4.

June Mercer is a corporate manager, and she and her husband John Mercer, a company owner, praised the artists of Shen Yun.

She said the dancers’ “movements are magical, and how they seem to fly—and humble in ways.”

According to the program book, Shen Yun’s productions draw their inspiration from China’s 5,000 years of civilization. Values such as compassion and loyalty, kindness and bravery lie at the heart of traditional Chinese culture.”

“There is some philosophy behind it,” Mrs. Mercer said. “Goodness, and grace, and a higher calling.”

She added that the nature of Shen Yun could possibly be described as oneness or a unity with beings.

“I think they do a very good job of the idea of the universality of emotions,” she continued. “And they just float like stardust.”

Mr. Mercer agreed.

“I think it’s great, pretty outstanding,” said Mr. Mercer.

Mr. Mercer was especially impressed by Shen Yun’s state-of-the-art digital backdrop, which extends the stage and transports “the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one,” reads the company’s website.

“I’ve never seen blending of the picture in the background with the dancers—the timing is incredible,” Mr. Mercer said.

Mrs. Mercer said, “The colors are magnificent,” she said. “I would love to wear clothes like that, and be that graceful and move like that.”

“It seems like there is a very spiritual element to this,” Mr. Mercer said, adding that what Shen Yun portrays is “a common foundation among many religions.”

“There is a goodness that can be brought out. I think they did a good job portraying that.”
