Sipping a glass of rose at a winery while looking at the Empire State Building is now a reality for New Yorkers. Rooftop Reds, in Brooklyn Navy Yard, is the world’s first commercially viable rooftop vineyard system, according to its founder, Devin Shomaker.
The 15,000-square foot rooftop is home to a micro-vineyard with 168 grape vines, held in custom planter boxes. The vineyard is thriving because of its unusual location, Shomaker said.
“We’re the warmest vineyard site in New York State. All these urban attributes are actually contributing to a more developed, more concentrated Bordeaux red varietal wine,” he said.
The vineyard produces one barrel of red wine each year. The first batch will go on sale in 2019.
“It’s going to be at least a thousand dollars a bottle, for this super exclusive production,” Shomaker said.
