WASHINGTON—Justina Uram is a busy lady these days. She just graduated from law school and will be taking the bar exam next month. In her spare time, she writes a column on human rights for Examiner.com. She took time out from her busy life of studying and writing to come to a matinee of Shen Yun Performing Arts. This was the fifth show of a seven-show run at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in the nation’s capital. This show on Jan. 23 was a full house.

Ms. Uram said she found the performance “vibrant, colorful, and also very moving, with an important message.”

“The general splendor of the entire show was just great,” Ms. Uram said.

With Ms. Uram’s special interest in human rights issues, she was naturally drawn to the portrayal of persecution in China today of persons for their spiritual beliefs. Ms. Uram related to an episode depicted in dance of a family, in which the mother is taken away from her child and persecuted.

“I thought that was an extremely powerful message and one that was really relatable for people who might not be familiar with what is going in China today. [You could say,] ‘look these people are just like me and this is what’s happening to them because of their spiritual beliefs.’ So, I thought that was particularly powerful.

Ms. Uram was touched by how this issue was handled artistically.

“I was blown away by the performance. I am familiar with the human rights abuses going on in China against Falun Dafa practitioners and others. And I thought this was a beautiful way to combine such an important message with traditional Chinese classical dance and music. So, I thought it was really great.”
