NEW YORK—The dancers of Shen Yun Performing Arts interact with the animated digital backdrop in delightful and sometimes surprising ways. Filmmaker Yaron Zilberman, known for “A Late Quartet” and the documentary “Watermarks,” praised the visual presentation after watching Shen Yun at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Saturday.

“I like the way it was presented in terms of the visual on the screen and how it relates to the dance,” Mr. Zilberman said. Shen Yun’s state-of-the-art digital backdrop opens the stage to scenes from ancient China—from the courts of various dynasties to a harvest celebration along the Yellow River to the heavens, where Chinese culture is said to originate.

The intricate and detailed digital animation allows for a synchronization of setting and performance that cannot be seen with traditional props and backdrops. Mr. Zilberman admired the artistry and production design.

His young children also appreciated the beauty of the performance. “I’m here with my two children and they also loved it and they said, ‘Wow, what a beautiful thing,’” said Mr. Zilberman, adding that Shen Yun appeals to all ages.

“It is a beautiful culture,” he said of the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization revived by the New York-based company. Story-based classical Chinese dance brings the legends and grand historical moments to life.

“I could see the history and the dance and the culture,” he said. “It was beautiful.”
