LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas—Michael Lewis relaxed back into his seat and absorbed the beauty of Shen Yun Performing Arts exuding from the stage of the Robinson Center Music Hall, on Jan. 2.

“It’s obvious that it’s a very spiritual performance and you try to weave that in to ... especially with the meditation and a lot of the spiritual aspects of China that’s woven into the performance and it comes out loud and clear,” the executive vice president said.

He and his wife Anne, also a vice president for a different company, both agreed the exhilarating and colorful New York-based performance, was lovely.

Mr. Lewis said many cultural aspects of ancient China stood out for him.

“The thing that struck me ... we recognized a lot of cultural aspects, especially through the Tang Dynasty, and how that was the cultural pinnacle of China,” he said.

The Shen Yun dancers, trained in both classical Chinese dance and folk and ethnic dance, also stood out for Mr. Lewis.

The dramatic jumping, spinning, and flipping techniques are just part of the vast repertoire of movements that make classical Chinese dance one of the most demanding and expressive art forms in the world, the company website says.

He like the dance movements, “especially with the girls [gliding] so fast across the stage,” Mr. Lewis said.

“And the beautiful colors too,” Mrs. Lewis said.

Every costume in a Shen Yun performance is presented with brilliant colors, displaying a splendid spectacle from the Tang Dynasty’s “Raiment of Rainbows and Feathers” to imperial dragon robes, phoenix coronets, and cloud capes.
