SEATTLE—Divine Performing Arts (DPA), at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, continued to captivate audiences with its beauty. Judge Gavin said, “It’s wonderful, I enjoyed everything about it.”

This was the first time Judge Gavin witnessed a show like this. He said, “I think it’s wonderful, and really think it’s very wonderful that this dance company is able to preserve all these classical dances. They’ll be lost if they don’t.”

Sometimes audience members see profound messages in the show. Judge Gavin found a sense of universality in it, “Well, the message from it is that a lot of us think as Christians or Buddhists or whatever religion we are, that we are different, but we aren’t.”

Many are surprised to learn that the company, with its authentic Chinese art, is based in New York. DPA is not allowed to perform in China, because it does not conform to communist ideology. About this, Judge Gavin said, “I may not like it, but that’s the way it is. Hopefully, when dance companies like this come through and … teach enough people and [it] will spread the word, and maybe it will make a change. All it takes is just one voice.”

He had favorite dances. He said, “I liked how the drummers did really well, and I liked the flower dance and the ladies, the elegance of it. As far as the drummers ... the rhythm of it, the sound of it. I really liked the flower dance by the ladies.”
