PHILADELPHIA—Divine Performing Arts launched its 2009 World Tour in Philadelphia on Friday night, December 19 at the historic Merriam Theater.

Claire Bogan, a student of writing and political communication in Boston attended opening night with her mother, Dr. Kate Gallucci. During the intermission Ms. Bogan said: “I think it is fantastic! I’m really impressed with the choreography. The costumes are bright and look wonderful with the movements, and the original musical score is phenomenal.”

She thought representations of the Tibetan mountain culture were “amazing.” She was also particularly moved by the piece “Persecuted on a Sacred Path” which tells the tragic story of a family broken by contemporary persecution in China. The scenes that unfold in this dance drama ultimately present a message of hope, exploring a longstanding Chinese belief that good people are ultimately rewarded, even if not in this lifetime.

“All of the costumes were beautiful. The fabric and the way that the performers move their arms, and the way that the fabric flows, is just absolutely gorgeous.”

Her mother, Dr. Kate Gallucci, physician, said her favorite piece was the dance called “The Udumbara’s Bloom”. This tells of the legendary flower of Buddhist lore which blossoms but once every three thousand years and unfolds to herald the coming of a great sage or enlightened being. “What impressed me most were the dancers’ faces and their expressions of serenity and happiness.”

Divine Performing Arts 2009 World Tour Philadelphia until December 21st.
