TAIPEI, Taiwan—Monday, March 1, was the first working day of another busy week. While drizzling rain fell throughout the day, the audience watching the Divine Performing Arts’ (DPA) final performance in Taipei City was immersed in an enthusiastic artistic atmosphere at the Taipei International Conventional Center. They were oblivious to the chill outside. During the two and a half hour performance, voices of praise came from every corner of the auditorium, while waves of thunderous applause reverberated through the five-story hall. At the end of the show, the audience was still immersed in the glory of the 5,000-year old Chinese traditional culture. Not until the performers took three curtain calls did the audience prepare to leave.
This is the second time Dr. Chen, executive director of a center at a university, attended the show. He said the DPA performance had combined faith with culture very successfully and that the domain of culture is so broad that interpreting culture flawlessly by artistic performances is very difficult. However, DPA had accomplished this. Furthermore, the inner implications of the program can influence people’s hearts. This is very precious.
“From the messages revealed by the stories, from the songs, and from the text in the backdrops, it can be clearly seen that DPA intends to stimulate people’s compassion,” Dr. Chen said.
Dr. Chen studies the Buddha dharma. When he heard Guan Guaimin’s song “All Time Is Just for This Time,” he was deeply affected. “Human lives are reincarnated. The lyrics of the song point out that our current life is very important.”
According to the introduction provided by the program masters of ceremonies Benjamin Freed and Xie Jing, DPA consists of three groups which are touring worldwide. They have received many favorable reviews. The other two groups are performing in Paris and in Rhode Island, United States. What are the elements that make the DPA performances impress the world? Dr. Chen has his observations.
Referring to the colorful costume design, the graceful, resonant voices of the signers, the lyrics that enlightened people’s hearts, the profundity of the stories’ implications, the backdrops of 3-D moving pictures, and the localized, amiable conversations between the host and the hostess, Dr. Chen said, “The show demonstrates great creativity and incorporates elements of innovation.”
Dr. Chen said he hopes more people can see the DPA performance so that DPA’s value can be maximized.
