Officer Joe Holt of the Independence Police Department in Missouri witnessed an act of chivalry, which should be the norm these days but sadly is not. He took a photo, and when he posted it on Facebook, it spread to thousands of people online. The photo depicting a young man shielding an elderly lady from the rain in a mall parking lot was touching by itself. What neither of them probably noticed was the color of their skin—he is black; she is white. But Holt noticed, and he wrote the following on the Independence Police Department page:
“With all the hate fueled by color, belief [...] or race it actually pisses me off. Why, because most of it is based off what they read in the papers.”

It all started when Officer Holt was waiting out a torrential downpour in his cruiser in a Hy-Vee parking lot. All of a sudden, he saw the older woman, who was 93 years old, rushing through the parking lot without a jacket or umbrella. But before he had time to act, a young man flashed out of his car and held his coat over the woman to shield her. “This kid cared less about race, religion or color. The only thing this kid cared about was being kind,“ the officer wrote. ”He then walked back to his car all while not saying a word to his Auntie or Mom when he exited or re-entered.” Wanting to let the parents know what a respectful son they had raised, Holt went over to the family to let them know. At first, the young man’s mother was startled by the sight of the uniform.

Holt put her reservations to rest. “I told his mom that she has done amazing with him and I hope and pray he goes places,“ he wrote. ”She started tearing up, because I was a cop and took time out of my day to call him out on what I witnessed.“ Then he added, ”Kiddo If you see me on the street again this guy owes ya a dinner. You ever need anything I will come running to ya.” The young man’s name is Tyrea Pryor, and his mother’s is Ebony Pryor. One of their family members happened to see the post online and notified them. It turned out that, through social media, the post was shared over 2,500 times. And indeed, Officer Holt made good on his promise when they finally reunited. Independence Police Department quoted their officer on a Facebook post as saying: “Well this kiddo who I have only known a short time already means the world to me. As promised after finding him I took him out to dinner. He and his wonderful mom Ebony enjoyed some Red Lobster.” But the story didn’t end there. Later, Tyrea was honored with a special proclamation at City Hall in nearby Kansas City, not only for his act of chivalry but also for all the volunteer work he does at school and in the community. As for the teenager, he was surprised to get so much attention for doing something so simple. “I was raised to do right toward anybody. It doesn’t matter what race or anything,” he told WDAF. “It doesn’t matter who it is, just do what you know is correct.” Though Tyrea never did any of it for a reward, the manager at the grocery store where the good deed took place asked if the young man would like to work there. The good deed did not go unrewarded. As for Officer Holt, mom Ebony was extremely grateful for what he had done. “What he felt that day and the compassion he had was wholehearted,” she said.   You may also want to watch this video Man stops his car in middle of road—then, he jumps out and stops traffic to do this
