FORT WORTH, Texas—Mary and Larry Spangler wanted to see Shen Yun Performing Arts last year, but the theater was already sold out by the time they heard of the show. This year, the couple bought tickets earlier, and managed to attend the performance at the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Jan. 6.

“It’s beautiful, and certainly very impressive and very unique,” said Mr. Spangler, CFO of Caliber Home Loans.

“It’s nice to be able to enjoy the customs and cultures that we’re seeing tonight,” Mrs. Spangler said.

Eight years ago, Shen Yun was established in New York by artists from around the world to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the performing arts.

Mrs. Spangler, who had recently been studying philosophy, said the performance was well-timed and fitting for her.

“I’m enjoying it even more because of that,” she said.

Traditional Chinese culture is said to be inspired by the heavens—from the costumes, a result of artistic inspiration, to the stories shown in Shen Yun. Values like benevolence, justice, wisdom and propriety, and divine retribution come from the teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and make up the core of the culture.

However, under the current regime in China, this culture was almost destroyed.

For the couple, Shen Yun’s revival of the culture was important because people don’t know, or perhaps they forget.

“I’m reminded of what the last 60 years has been about [in China] and what perhaps we haven’t been able to enjoy as a result of that,” Mr. Spangler said, referring to the Cultural Revolution and the communist regime in China. “It’s a good reminder for all of us.”
