As a source of information, the Internet has become absolutely integral to most people’s lives. But when it comes to new forms of social media, the jury is still out on whether the human race is better or worse off following these inventions.

“Things that we introduce as servants can often, through changing our desires and installing short circuits in our emotional life, become our lords,” Scruton said.

Cowen responded that he had found ways to make social media work for him, rather than the other way around. He follows his favorite musicians, for example. He uses Twitter, because it works for him better than Facebook.

In the age of social media, people who can choose intelligently, and avoid getting entangled in the endless availability of fact, folly, and friends, will fare the best. People need to realize that they’ve got to do this, Scruton said.
