NEW YORK—The cafe that is said to often serve stars such as David Schwimmer, Uma Thurman, and Claire Danes throughout its 16-year tenure in Soho is closing permanently Sunday.

The landlord recently exercised his right to take over the cafe’s space four years before the end of its 20-year lease.

“The cafe is closing because the landlord is taking advantage of a clause in our lease,” owner Albert Bitton told Grub Street. “Although the lease initially went until 2018, he has the right to move in at this point if he does not rent the space to anyone else. He owns the mosaic store next to us and has chosen to expand his business.”

Café Café, however, can’t afford to open a location somewhere else.

The cafe furniture is currently for sale.
