Two-thirds of Americans have spent time learning how to play an instrument at some stage in their lives, according to the results of a series of surveys conducted by data site, YouGov. Learning an instrument is beneficial at any age.
For children, learning the language of music helps with development, including an “enhancement in verbal abilities and general reasoning skills,” notes a 2014 study published at the National Library of Medicine. “Musical training uniquely engenders near and far transfer effects, preparing a foundation for a range of skills, and thus fostering cognitive development.”
