A few sprigs of store-bought spearmint or peppermint can be put in water to root. It’s that easy, and it’s a warm welcome to this fun and versatile herb.

A hardy perennial, mint will grow in full sun to partial shade from one to three feet tall. They can also be kept smaller in a pot on a kitchen windowsill with regular harvesting. In fact, the more mint is used, the better, as the most flavorful leaves are found on the newest growth.

Look out for their flower spikes (a sign to the plant that it’s reaching maturity), which should be pinched off as soon as they appear in order to keep it forever young. If the plant gets too big, divide it and share it with a friend or neighbor, who may have some other flavors to trade.
