KANSAS CITY, Missouri—In the City of Fountains, a populous place in the heartland of the United States known for its 200 water fountains, a grand welcome was given to Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Music Hall on Saturday night, March 13. Enthusiasm for the show was reflected in the audience responses to the performances.

Meghan Cummings, the beautifully attired executive director of the Patricia Stevens Model and Talent Agency in Kansas City, said in an interview during the intermission that her impression of the show was that it is “really spot-on and I thought they were just beautiful.”

Ms. Cummings was impressed with the style she saw and said the ensembles were very traditional, which she admired, and she “definitely liked all the flowing colors.”

“Everything kind of flows, and so I really enjoyed all of it.”

She said she was looking and studying for inspiration while enjoying the show.

Her companion, Mr. Florian Gornik from Schwechat, Austria, is a leading player on the Pacific Tigers male volleyball team at University of the Pacific and frequently attends theater performances. He was inspired by an advertisement he saw for Shen Yun and bought tickets for himself and Ms. Cummings. For Mr. Florian, Shen Yun “was a really new experience—seeing the culture, seeing the traditional dances, the story behind it all.”

With a background that includes an appreciation of the arts and experience in college sports, Mr. Florian was greatly impressed by the skills and physical ability of the Shen Yun dancers, observing “it’s just crazy what they do on the stage … I would say the dances are really artistic. It’s really emotional and really, they’re all athletes to me.” He also commented on the power of the orchestra, saying that anyone he knew would enjoy the music, which he highly recommended, “because I think that’s a big part—big orchestra down there, and it’s a great musical performance as well.”

Mr. Florian and Ms. Cummings said they were already thinking of how their colleagues and friends would love to see the show, and they enthusiastically looked forward to the second half of the show.

According to the official website, “Shen Yun Performing Arts is a triumph of collaboration, bringing together leading dancers, choreographers, and musicians from around the world” to rekindle a five–millennia-old culture and its universal values. Part of the artistic magic includes storytelling through classical Chinese dance, colorful and unique costumes, original orchestral music, state-of-the art backdrops, and outstanding vocalists.

Shen Yun will conclude its Midwest tour, March 14, with a Sunday matinee performance at Kansas City’s Music Hall. The next stop in the 2010 World Tour in the United States will be Ogden, Utah, March 16-18.
