BRUGES, Belgium–As crowds poured into the theater for Shen Yun Performing Arts’ local debut, blue skies were over Bruges. This UNESCO World Heritage City is not far from the North Sea and is famous for its churches, museums, and painters’ sons who have helped to write the history of classical Western art through their Flemish masterworks.

The Concertgebouw, the top performance venue in this city, renowned for its art and culture, played host to Shen Yun’s opening performance in Bruges, where the audience warmly received Shen Yun with three curtain calls and a standing ovation.

A very knowledgeable member of the dance community, Marleen Wouters, took some time to share her enthusiasm for Shen Yun. “I thought it was a very marvelous show. For me it was very surprising because I have never seen anything like that before,” she said.

Ms. Wouters is a former dancer and now a leader of dance schools in West Flanders. Ms. Wouters’ good friend Jeanne Brabants, founder of “Ballet van Vlaanderen,” invited her to come see the show. This was her first introduction to classical Chinese dance.

Ms. Wouters felt that “to me it was like different styles coming together. I understood that the other styles come from this one. Anyway, it was very interesting.” Speaking from her years of experience, she observed, “The dancers are trained very well. Well rehearsed. Everything was arranged very nicely. And the costumes, lovely.”

Ms. Wouters noted that she really enjoyed Shen Yun and she also observed that others around her did as well.

A few dances came quickly to mind when recalling the show. “There were different special ones,” she said. “The one with the ladies with those little bells was very nice [referring to In a Miao Village]. And then there were the men with the bows [Imperial Archers]. Those were all magnificent. I have to say, it was all perfect.”

There will be one more performance of Shen Yun at the Concertgebouw in Bruges on Wednesday, March 10 at 8:00 p.m.
