Replace Your Old Garage Door Opener
The three primary options for garage door opener designs are in the drive mechanisms: chain, screw, and belt. Chain drives are usually the least expensive, but also the noisiest. Screw drives are middle of the road, and the belt drives are the quietest. ungvar/Shutterstock

Dear James: My old noisy garage door opener needs to be replaced. What is the best type to get for a two-car opener, and do you have any helpful installation tips?—Marcia G.

Dear Marcia: A garage door opener is not only convenient and a time-saver, but a security feature. You are much safer staying inside your car until it is in the garage with the door closed than if you have to get out at night and open the door manually. If it fails to work, you can still manually open the door.
