Director Leo McCarey may have won his Best Director Oscar for “The Awful Truth” (1937) but believed that he’d won for the wrong film. He was convinced that “Make Way for Tomorrow,” released the same year, was his best. The film dwells on marriage and family, asking harsh but vital questions of the able-bodied young. These are questions that elderly folk sometimes can’t bear to ask themselves. It may be a hard watch for grandparents or aging parents, but it’s essential viewing for young or aspiring parents.
