This week, we feature a couple of dramas about kids traveling to new environs—one about an orphan girl and the other about a Navajo boy.

New Release

‘Frybread Face and Me’

When young Navajo boy Benny (Keir Tallman) leaves the comfort of his home in San Diego to visit his grandmother on the Navajo reservation in Arizona, he meets his cousin Fry (Charley Hogan), and the two kids begin a journey of self-discovery.

This charming drama speaks to the importance of familial bonds and embracing one’s traditions. It’s beautifully shot and features down-to-earth dialogue and understated performances by its excellent cast. This is a truly touching and delightful movie to watch with your family and friends.

Family Pick

‘Anne of Green Gables’

Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla want an orphan—a boy—to work on their sprawling farm on Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century. When they are sent young, skinny, and imaginative Anne Shirley (Megan Follows) instead, a series of trials and tribulations ensue as Anne tries to adjust to her new environs.

This excellent TV mini-series is based on a novel of the same name by bestselling author Lucy Maud Montgomery. It’s a fascinating watch, with nuanced performances by its solid cast, many thought-provoking situations, and truly heartfelt emotional scenes.

Drama | Family Release Date: Feb. 17, 1986 Starring: Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst, Richard Farnsworth Running Time: 3 hours, 19 minutes MPAA Rating: TV-G Where to Watch: Amazon, GazeboTV Rated: 4 stars out of 5

A Clued-In ’90s Teen Comedy

 ‘Clueless’

Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is part of the in-crowd at a Beverly Hills high school, along with her best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash). While Cher may seem ditzy and superficial, she’s actually quite clever and charming beneath her fashionista image.

Director Amy Heckerling does a great job of presenting a loose adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma” in what seems to be a movie about the plight of one-dimensional characters. Underneath tells a relatable story dealing with the intricacies of human nature. It also features some biting satire.

Comedy | Romance Release Date: July 19, 1995 Director: Amy Heckerling Starring: Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy Running Time: 1 hour, 37 minutes MPAA Rating: PG-13 Where to Watch: Redbox, Vudu, Amazon Rated: 3.5 stars out of 5

A Gripping World War II Drama

 ‘Destination Tokyo’

Capt. Cassidy (Cary Grant) is tasked with sneaking a submarine right under the noses of the Japanese during World War II. Can he hold his crew of disparate characters together for the entire mission?

The tension in this film is incredible as Cassidy and his crew face all manner of challenges on their covert mission. The only drawback is the fake-looking underwater sets.

Adventure | War Release Date: Dec. 31, 1943 Director: Delmer Daves Starring: Cary Grant, John Garfield, Alan Hale Running Time: 2 hours, 15 minutes Not Rated Where to Watch: Vudu, Apple TV, Amazon Rated: 4 stars out of 5
