This week, we feature a historical drama based on the 1983 Rally World Championships and a blockbuster ’80s film about a cocky pilot.

New Release

‘Race for Glory: Audi Vs. Lancia’

Director Stefano Mordini chronicles the real-life struggle for supremacy between Germany’s and Italy’s rally racing teams—personified by Roland Gumpert (Daniel Brühl) and Cesare Fiorio (Riccardo Scamarcio), respectively.

This film not only accurately conveys the intrinsically dangerous nature of rally racing—with incredible cinematography and immersive sound design—but it also captures the racer’s behind-the-scenes lives (particularly on the part of Cesare Fiorio), leading up to the highly contested 1983 Rally World Championships.

Biography | Drama | Sport Release Date: Jan. 5, 2024 Director: Stefano Mordini Starring: Daniel Brühl, Riccardo Scamarcio, Katie Clarkson-Hill Running Time: 1 hour, 34 minutes MPAA Rating: R Where to Watch: Theaters Rated: 4 stars out of 5

Indie Pick

‘Sidewalls’

Martin (Javier Drolas) and Mariana (Pilar López de Ayala) have a lot in common and seem like they’d be highly compatible. But, although they are neighbors in the busy city of Buenos Aires and visit the same haunts, the timing of any meeting is always off.

This is one of those slowly-moving romcoms that draws you in with its sumptuous cinematography and charming characters. Although it accurately conveys the feelings of alienation that can sometimes be felt by those living in big cities, it’s also a hopeful film with a big heart.

Comedy | Drama Release Date: Oct. 26, 2011 Director: Gustavo Taretto Starring: Javier Drolas, Miguel Dedovich, Pilar López de Ayala Running Time: 1 hour, 35 minutes MPAA Rating: Not Rated Where to Watch: Amazon, Tubi, Apple TV Rated: 3.5 stars out of 5

Enjoyable and Nostalgic ‘80s Americana

‘Top Gun’

When Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and buddy Lt. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) get the opportunity to attend Top Gun, the special Navy training program that accepts only the most skilled naval pilots, they jump on it. But a mishap causes Mitchell’s life to take a turn for the worse. Will he recover?

Although the drama follows the tragedy-redemption storyline trope, it’s full of over-the-top masculine drama, charming romance, and some breathtaking aerial photography.

Action | Drama Release Date: May 16, 1986 Director: Tony Scott Starring: Tom Cruise, Tim Robbins, Kelly McGillis Running Time: 1 hour, 49 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: Amazon, Vudu, Apple TV Rated: 4 stars out of 5

Standing Up Against Evil in Vietnam

‘The Green Berets’

Col. Mike Kirby (John Wayne) leads a U.S. Special Forces team (that is, the Green Berets) on clandestine missions into Vietnam. However, Kirby has to contend not only with vile communist forces, but also an embedded reporter who is cynical of the Vietnam War.

This rousing actioner has strong patriotic themes, but its “G” rating is misleading, since it has some very violent scenes.

Drama | War Release Date: July 4, 1968 Director: Ray Kellogg, John Wayne, Mervyn LeRoy Starring: John Wayne, David Janssen, Jim Hutton Running Time: 2 hours, 22 minutes MPAA Rating: G Where to Watch: Vudu, Apple TV, Amazon Rated: 3.5 stars out of 5
