This week, we feature a slick actioner about a private investigator chasing a missing star and a heartfelt drama about a foster girl searching for home.

New Release

‘Trouble Man’

Jaxen (Michael Jai White) walked away from the badge years ago. But when a prominent R&B star vanishes without a trace, he’s dragged back into a world he thought he’d left behind. What starts as a routine missing-person case spirals into a tangled web of secrets, rivalries, and buried truths.

This actioner isn’t just a throwback to the ‘70s original; it’s a bold remix, with Method Man, Mike Epps, and Michael Jai White turning up the heat. The action snaps, the vibe drips cool, and Michael Stradford’s script holds it all together.

Family Pick

‘The Great Gilly Hopkins’

Gilly Hopkins (Sophie Nélisse) is a sharp-tongued foster kid with a secret agenda. But when her scheme backfires, she finds herself stuck with Maime Trotter (Kathy Bates)—a woman who seems far too kind to be real.

I expected a sappy after-school special, but this little gem surprised me. It’s funny, heartfelt, and just messy enough to feel real. Nélisse nails the lovable brat energy, and Bates brings her usual magic. It reminds us that family isn’t always about blood; it’s about who sticks around when the chips are down.

Comedy | Drama | Family Release Date: Oct. 7, 2016 Director: Stephen Herek Starring: Sophie Nélisse, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close Running time: 1 hour, 39 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: Amazon, Apple TV, YouTube Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

Off the Grid, Into the Heart

‘Hampstead’

Emily (Diane Keaton), a cash-strapped American widow stuck in a posh London flat she can’t afford, stumbles upon Donald (Brendan Gleeson), a bearded hermit living happily in a forest shack. When developers try to evict him, Emily takes up the cause, despite his grumbles.

The two leads make a surprisingly great team. She’s uptight but endearing, he’s rugged and doesn’t care what others think. It’s an underdog story with heart, poking fun at shallow folks and celebrating the weird paths love can take.

Comedy | Drama | Romance Release Date: June 14, 2019 Director: Joel Hopkins Starring: Diane Keaton, Brendan Gleeson, James Norton, Alistair Petrie Running time: 1 hour, 42 minutes MPAA Rating: PG-13 Where to Watch: Amazon, Apple TV, YouTube Rated: 3 stars out of 5

Brains Meet Bombshell

‘Ball of Fire’

A straitlaced professor (Gary Cooper) hunting for slang meets a fast-talking nightclub singer (Barbara Stanwyck) on the run. She moves in with him and his fellow eggheads to dodge trouble, only to stir up more.

This one’s fast, funny, and full of charm. Stanwyck dazzles, and Cooper somehow makes awkward look smooth. The slang’s dated but delightful—a true romcom classic.

Comedy | Romance Release Date: Jan. 9, 1942 Director: Howard Hawks Starring: Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Oscar Homolka Running Time: 1 hour, 51 minutes Not Rated Where to Watch: Amazon, Apple TV, Kanopy Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5
