This week, we feature a touching story of brothers finding common ground and an enduring transatlantic romance set in a charming bookstore.

New Release

‘The Short Game’

Young golfer Jeremy (Ben Krieger) is chasing a scholarship when he’s unexpectedly pulled into caring for his younger autistic brother, Ethan (Owen Himfar). At first, it feels like a setback, but, as they spend more time together, Jeremy begins to see the game and his brother in a new light.

What looks like a sports story turns into a moving tale of brotherhood, growth, and unexpected strength. The leads have great chemistry, and Himfar brings authenticity to his role. It’s not flashy, but this hopeful drama lands where it counts.

Drama Release Date: July 25, 2025 Director: Frank Sanza Starring: Ben Krieger, Mackenzie Astin, Katherine Cunningham Running Time: 1 hour, 33 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: Theaters Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

Family Pick

‘Yes Day’

Carlos (Edgar Ramírez) and Allison Torres (Jennifer Garner) used to live boldly, but now their days are full of routines, and they say no too often. To reconnect, they try one spontaneous day of only yeses. What begins as an experiment pushes the family out of their comfort zones and closer together.

This film isn’t for cynics, and that’s its charm. Bright and silly, it’s clearly made for kids. If you lean in, there’s fun to be had. The messages are wholesome, and it’s a perfect choice for family movie night without overdoing it.

Comedy | Family Release Date: March 12, 2021 Director: Miguel Arteta Starring: Jennifer Garner, Edgar Ramírez, Jenna Ortega Running time: 1 hour, 26 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: Netflix Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

The Bookstore Owner and the Star

‘Notting Hill’

When actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) crosses paths with quiet London bookseller William Thacker (Hugh Grant), everything changes. A clumsy accident sparks an unlikely romance, but their bond is tested by press attention and clashing worlds.

It could have been predictable but this romcom wins with charm and warmth. The writing has heart and the humor is subtle. Grant is endearing, even when Roberts’s character turns distant. What lingers is the rhythm, a love story with wit, feeling, and good company.

Comedy | Drama | Romance Release Date: May 28, 1999 Director: Roger Michell Starring: Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts, Richard McCabe Running time: 2 hours, 4 minutes MPAA Rating: PG-13 Where to Watch: Amazon, Apple TV, YouTube Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

Rustlers, Rascals, and Roy

‘Sons of the Pioneers’

A soft-spoken scientist (Roy Rogers) with a passion for bugs is pulled into Western trouble when his old sheriff pal asks for help with a string of ranch attacks. Roy would rather chase butterflies than bandits, but steps up when things get rough.

The story itself is simple, but the charm is in the delivery. Roy plays it calm, sings a little, and lets the bad guys unravel.
