TAINAN, Taiwan—In the former capital of Taiwan, New York’s Divine Performing Arts (DPA) International Company graced the Tainan Municipal Cultural Center, bringing joy for thousands on February 20.

“It really is very brilliant,“ said Ye Bilian, chair of Chinese Flower Design Association in Tainan. ”Their gestures fully manifest the entirety of ancient China and the customs. I feel very intoxicated. I kind of forgot about myself while watching the show, I was so captivated by the stories.”

Inspired by the spirit of an ancient culture, DPA brings to life classical Chinese dance and music in a gloriously colorful and exhilarating show. Its masterful choreography and graceful routines range from grand classical processions to ethnic and folk dances, with gorgeously costumed dancers moving in synchronized patterns.

“Seeing all of them having the reverence towards divine beings is very touching. It is manifested through their gestures; they seemed to have turned into Gods and Bodhisattvas themselves, assimilating into their beliefs. And the backdrops display the descending of fairies; it appeared so real. So I say it’s very moving.”

Classical Chinese dance has its foundation in China’s divinely-inspired culture, while digitally enhanced backdrops bring the ancient dance into the 21st century adding a sense of awe to each performance.

“The backdrops combined very well with the dancers and their gestures, while the gorgeous costumes brought out the beauty of Chinese classical dance. The entire production is very harmonious.”
