Even though Steve Kemp worked, married, and honeymooned in national parks, he revealed in the preface to his “An Exaltation of Parks: John D. Rockefeller Jr.’s Crusade to Save America’s Wonderlands” that his knowledge of one of the country’s most historically recognized financiers and philanthropists “would have fit on one side of a three-by-five-inch card.”
A magazine article assignment prompted Kemp’s to research Rockefeller Jr., and that work led him to realize just how involved “Junior” was in safeguarding many of the national parks we now treasure. Kemp wrote:
