“A human community too must collect leaves and stories, and turn them into an account. It must build soil, and build that memory of itself—in lore and story and song—which will be its culture.”

With these wise words, writer and farmer Wendell Berry helps us understand what culture is and why it matters. Culture is, in part, a community’s understanding of itself and of the world. It’s tied to local history, geography, and philosophy. True culture is an expression of what that community values, an incarnation of all that is true and good and beautiful within it, and a celebration of the world in which the community finds itself.
